About Duty Sorted
Who runs it
Duty Sorted is run by Bradley Cadd, a one-person business trading as Duty Sorted. You can write to [email protected] and a person will reply.
What it does
It helps small UK alcohol producers, starting with cider makers, work out their Alcohol Duty and Small Producer Relief. You log your batches, it keeps your production-year total, and it sets out each month's return figures in the order HMRC's service asks for them. There's also a free calculator that needs no sign-up, and plain-English guides.
It doesn't send your return to HMRC. You type the figures in and submit the return yourself, so you always see what's being sent.
Where the figures come from
- Rates and relief tables are taken from GOV.UK: Alcohol Duty rates and Small Producer Relief tables. They change every 1 February, and the new ones are added when they're published.
- The calculation is tested against the worked examples in GOV.UK's guidance.
- Where GOV.UK is unclear, the tool says so, or asks you to check with HMRC, rather than guessing. For example, it stops rather than pick a tax type code HMRC doesn't list.
- Each guide says when it was last checked against GOV.UK, and links to the pages it relies on.
What it isn't
- It isn't made or approved by HMRC. It's independent.
- It isn't tax advice. It helps you prepare your figures. You're responsible for your return, so check every figure before you submit it.
- It doesn't cover everything. Groups and connected businesses, products made for you under contract, and Northern Ireland's extra thresholds aren't handled. The product tells you where it can't decide for you.
